Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
