The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
