Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
